2024 NZIHC Hockey Squad

The 2024 NZISA New Zealand Indian Hockey Championship is coming up on Saturday 1st to Monday 3rd June in North Harbour!

The return to the summit is over a week away! This year, the 16 blokes tasked with capturing the Dhyan hand Trophy are under the leadership of a new captain, Mitesh Patel. Mitesh will don the armband and lead the men into battle.

Armanjot, his Vice Captain, has been setting the hockey world alight since last year's King's Birthday Tournament and will serve as a strong and influential leader on the turf. The squad has a few new faces this year, with Raj Bhana and Kailesh Leatham adding their experience, and Manwinder Nagra adding his youth and flair in his CD debut.

Nevertheless, the team still carries the strong Central District legacy, and with supporters on the sideline, who are easily the loudest, proudest, and most fun, the journey over the Harbour Bridge to challenge for the DC promises to be a belter.

The draw for the weekend can be downloaded here or viewed below. Livestreaming details to follow shortly…

CDISC WIN T&G SHIELD!

CD WIN T&G SHIELD!

More history was created over the 2023 King’s Birthday Tournament, with CDISC winning the Turners & Growers (T&G) Hockey Challenge Shield for the first time!

CD has played a number of challenges over the years, but have not managed to uplift the T&G Shield until this year. The Men’s B Section Final against Wellington B became a Shield Challenge as Wellington were the current holders at that game, with CD’s fine 2-0 win in the final allowing us to lift the shield for the first time.

The Turners & Growers Hockey Challenge Shield, commonly known as the ‘T&G’, came about in 1973 where NZISA decided to introduce a Hockey Challenge to be played like the famous Ranfurly Shield. Donated by Turners and Growers, a fruit auction business, rules governing the shield was implemented, and have changed over the years.

The shield was officially introduced in 1975 with Christchurch being the inaugural winners. Clubs had a three-year maximum tenure.

In 1994 only B teams from Auckland, Pukekohe, Wellington, and North Harbour could challenge against Christchurch, Waikato, Central Districts and Bay of Plenty teams. Clubs no longer had to relinquish the shield if regular challenges were held.

In 2008 it was decided that clubs now had to play two games per year or accept a challenge at QBT. In recent years, with challenges not being able to be formed, the T&G has been taken straight to QBT (now KBT) and played throughout the weekend.

CDISC has contested the T&G Shield in:

  • 1993 against Wellington: WISC 1, CDISC 0

  • 1997 against Pukekohe: PISC 6, CDISC 3

  • 2019 against Christchurch: CISC 3 (4), CDISC 3 (2)

  • 2023 against Wellington: CDISC 2, WISC 0.

2023 KBT MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

KBT is done and dusted, but CD has one more achievement to celebrate. Our prestigious KBT Most Valuable Player is a special award, where only the highest calibre of players have had their names etched on the trophy, consisting of the match winning ball that took CD to win the Dhyan Chand Trophy in 2008.

For this year, CDISC is proud to announce our 2023 CDISC KBT MVP is... AMANJOT SINGH! At only 15 years of age, Amanjot was the talk of KBT for his fine skills on the turf ALL weekend, which also saw him named in the KBT Tournament Team.

We're proud to have both Amanjot and his brother Jeevanjot represent our club, and have their family now part of the CD Family. We look forward to both of them being key players for CDISC in the A-Section next year, which Aman has confirmed as "I'll definitely be back for years and years!".

Amanjot Singh presented with the MVP trophy by CDISC Life Member Paul Patel QSM.

CD WIN KING’S BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENT B SECTION!

CDISC back in the A Section!

The 2023 NZISA King’s Birthday Tournament was a HUGE success for CDISC with our club winning the Men’s B Section! The squad won all four games and played some outstanding hockey all weekend. To top off a fantastic weekend, the final was also a T&G (Turners and Growers) Shield Challenge, which CD took home for the first time with its fantastic 2-0 win over Wellington B! More on the T&G Shield here.

The squad saw three debutants this year with Connor Narasy, Amanjot Singh, and Jeevanjot Singh joining the CD Family, who all contributed to our success on field with Connor being top goal scorer of the B Section and scoring 4 in the first game, and Amanjot taking out the prestigious CDISC MVP award!

CDISC could not be prouder of the group of players, coaches, and managers who banded together to make this weekend such a huge success, and of course, to the loyal CD supporters who travelled to Wellington to support our club. CD was the talk of the turf with the stunning performance by our team, and of the very vocal supporters CD had on the side line.

Moving to the A Section is a boost to our club, as we strive to attain the coveted Dhyan Chand Trophy and taste the sweet success that achievement will provide. It has been sometime between drinks with CDISC last winning the A Section in 2008.

A big thank you to NZISA for hosting KBT, and for arranging games to be livestreamed via Local Gecko Productions. All CDISC games were livestreamed and can be found below, along with our own player medal and MVP presentation that occured straight after NZISA prizegiving. All other KBT livestreamed games are on the NZISA website.

We also thank our hosts, Wellington Indian Sports Club, who we have great ties with due to many of our members now living in the Wellington region and being members of WISC by way of playing hockey for their club and by being on their committee. Thank you WISC!

2024 will be an exciting year for CDISC, and we look forward to seeing more success on the field. Stats for the 2023 weekend are below, and photos below.

CDISC ANNOUNCES SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS

We are pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of our Club Service Awards

The awards are a recognition of our members who have contributed significantly to the club. We created this award to help commemorate our 40th Anniversary year and we intend to present these awards at our 40th Anniversary Function later this year.

Congratulations to all the recipients, thank you for your time and dedication to CDISC. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community organisation and our club exists and continues to exist because of the input of people like yourselves. Your contributions have been varied and encompass many years but they have all helped the club get to where it is today. We owe you a debt of gratitude to you and are very happy to be able to acknowledge your commitment through this award.

Please join us to congratulate the following recipients:

If you have trouble viewing the image a text based list of these awards can he found here.

Being able to recognise our members with these awards was made possible through the extensive efforts of Mahendra Naran and Sandeep Patel who researched and compiled lists of teams and committees through old newsletters, team registration forms and photos. Thank you for your time and effort working on this, it not only in relates to these awards but will serve as an important record for the club going forward. Thanks also the committee of 2020 who worked through creating the framework for these awards.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST LIFE MEMBERS

Please join us in congratulating CDISC’s two newest Life Members: Jack Parag and Mahendra Naran.

Jack Parag

Jack has been involved with CDISC since its inception as a player, committee member and NZISA delegate with over 24 years of service to the club.

Jack has been a well respected hockey player for CDISC and within the wider Wanganui and Manawatū region and has been central to building the family culture of CDISC. As a senior member of our hockey team he has been a constant mentor to young players. These players recall Jack taking time to look out for them and help them to find their feet within our CDISC teams. He continues to help define the culture within our club with his ability to talk to and relate to any of our members helping to create a friendly and open environment.

Jack’s contribution to the club as a Committee member and NZISA Delegate has been influential in setting the platform for the club to build on and become what it is today. Jack has been involved in the organisation of many successful events and has done a lot of work to help with fundraising which has allowed us to host the events to a high level.

Jack is one our most passionate and loyal supporters and one of the faces synonymous with CDISC. This is possibly helped by the fact that Jack has attended 52 QBTs! (Some with the Wanganui and then Wanganui-Manawatū Indian Sports Clubs prior to the formation of CDISC)

This award is fitting for a stalwart of our club and we are honoured to have Jack as a Life Member.

Jack’s full bio can be viewed here.

Mahendra Naran (Moe)

Moe has been an active and dedicated member of CDISC during his 28 years of service to the club. Moe has represented CDISC in many sporting codes including soccer, golf, cricket, and hockey. Moe’s ‘can do’ attitude has seen him don the goalkeeping pads for many years even though it is not his regular playing position. His mature and calm nature made him well suited to this position and saw him involved in CDISC’s famous QBT A-Section win in 2008 with a crucial save in the penalty shoot out.

Moe has been a long serving member of the club committee (25 years) and is known for always replying with his characteristic considered and thoughtful responses. In this way he helps set the tone for the committee, guiding us as we have worked through difficult decisions. Moe continues to take leadership in the organisation of our members who travel to Golden Oldies.

Moe’s willingness to roll up his sleeves and get to work has been crucial in helping CDISC run many successful events over the years. He is a master at organisation and is our go to for running logistics. He is always busy behind the scenes ensuring our events run like well oiled machines - helping to enhance CDISC’s reputation across the wider NZISA community.

Extremely humble and not fond of attention, it is a great privilege to be able to recognise the hard work Moe has put into the club with this Life Membership Award.

Mahendra’s full bio can be viewed here.

Both Jack and Moe have put a huge amount of effort into our club and are exemplary role models to our members. Please join us to congratulate Jack and Moe on these very well deserved awards.

    - Other business.

CDISC is turning 40 in 2022. It is a great achievement to have our club running consistently every years for the past 40 years, which is due to the immense passion and voluntarily help from our members.

As usual, we require members to join the executive and committee for 2022. We need both local members to help us promote and engage with those in our region, and members who now reside outside our region to give us a hand with various club items. It is a casual and friendly atmosphere where we carry out our meeting online to organise events that we attend and host.

We do have a few events coming up in 2022 which require help such as the clubs 40th Anniversary, attending QBT, Golden Oldies, and hosting the NZISA Golf Open later in the year, so having members getting involved at committee level to give us a hand would be great.

Last year we received two Life Member nominations for long-serving club members Mahendra Naran and Jack Parag. The nominations have been scrutinised by the CDISC Executive (President, Vice President and Secretary) and Life Members, who have approved that this nomination proceed to the next stage of being voted on by attendees at the upcoming AGM. Therefore a good attendance this year is requested as this will require a quorum. Copies of the nomination forms will be provided to AGM attendees, but if you would like to view these in advance, please contact us.

Lastly we do hope to see as many members attending the AGM this year, but if there are any apologies please email these in advance. Any queries you may have leading up to the AGM please do not hesitate to contact us.
