CDISC WIN T&G SHIELD!

CD WIN T&G SHIELD!

More history was created over the 2023 King’s Birthday Tournament, with CDISC winning the Turners & Growers (T&G) Hockey Challenge Shield for the first time!

CD has played a number of challenges over the years, but have not managed to uplift the T&G Shield until this year. The Men’s B Section Final against Wellington B became a Shield Challenge as Wellington were the current holders at that game, with CD’s fine 2-0 win in the final allowing us to lift the shield for the first time.

The Turners & Growers Hockey Challenge Shield, commonly known as the ‘T&G’, came about in 1973 where NZISA decided to introduce a Hockey Challenge to be played like the famous Ranfurly Shield. Donated by Turners and Growers, a fruit auction business, rules governing the shield was implemented, and have changed over the years.

The shield was officially introduced in 1975 with Christchurch being the inaugural winners. Clubs had a three-year maximum tenure.

In 1994 only B teams from Auckland, Pukekohe, Wellington, and North Harbour could challenge against Christchurch, Waikato, Central Districts and Bay of Plenty teams. Clubs no longer had to relinquish the shield if regular challenges were held.

In 2008 it was decided that clubs now had to play two games per year or accept a challenge at QBT. In recent years, with challenges not being able to be formed, the T&G has been taken straight to QBT (now KBT) and played throughout the weekend.

CDISC has contested the T&G Shield in:

  • 1993 against Wellington: WISC 1, CDISC 0

  • 1997 against Pukekohe: PISC 6, CDISC 3

  • 2019 against Christchurch: CISC 3 (4), CDISC 3 (2)

  • 2023 against Wellington: CDISC 2, WISC 0.
